Australian based design & installation company, Illumination Physics, recently completed the lighting refit of the Tiffany & Co.® flagship store on Collins Street, Melbourne, Australia. The clean, bright design by Peter Kemp of Illumination Physics perfectly mirrors the jewels sold within the store.
The Tiffany shopfront required an even spread of light with accurate colour mixing, from fixtures placed in a cramped space providing very little projection angle. Sourcing LED's from the Illumination Physics manufacturing facility, Kemp was able to provide a technical solution enabling a bright and even coverage on the facade.
For control of the façade Kemp choose for the CueCore solid-state lighting controller, supplied by Visual Productions' distributor in Australia, Melbourne based LightTechnik. Kemp required of his control choice, a solid-state solution with the ability to control the levels of each individual colour within each fixture, therefore allowing the lighting of the façade to be totally balanced for each colour look required.
The CueCore was programmed by John Stanley from LightTechnik, liaising with Kemp to insure that the brief from Tiffany & Co. was adhered to.
The Cuecore was programmed by the ‘DMX in’ feature using the Cuelux Lighting control software, also from Visual Productions. During the programming phase, Stanley used the CueCore's OSC protocol for an app on an iPad to communicate to Cuelux. This gave him the flexibility to walk across the road, with the designer Peter Kemp, to view the entire façade.
The Cuecore runs with a start up trigger command programmed in the scheduler using the time & day function, beginning everyday with the infamous ‘Tiffany Blue’. The Tiffany & Co. staff can then override this and select one of eight preprogrammed colours via a custom-made button station. The button station was connected to the CueCore's 4 on-board dry contact closures and to an additional GPI expansion module.
Stanley found programming his first CueCore install to be a positive experience, stating; “The entire Visual Productions range of products have been amazingly robust and intuitive. Its great to have that peace of mind straight out of the box, it just works.”
Tiffany & Co. launched their enlarged and renovated store to great appraisal earlier this year. Rightly proud of his design, Kemp stated “This stunning front entrance is an exemplary example of how meticulous planning, clever innovation and creative illumination can come together to produce an effect that is both evocative and unique. The result is a powerful and distinctive façade that enlivens Collins Street and beautifully showcases the store by bathing it in a variety of colours, including the world renowned ‘Tiffany Blue’.”

Our Slovenian distributor, MK Light Sound d.o.o., was asked by the local municipality to supply a lighting control system for lighting the fountain in the center of a busy roundabout in Zagorje ob Savi. The installation needed to be completed without disturbing traffic flow and with no obvious cabling etc. cluttering the view for the public. The installation would need to be energy efficient and changes must be able to be made remotely for special events and anniversaries.
Dean Karov who was in charge of the project immediately thought that 2 of the product lines his company distributes would prove to be ideal for this project and thus he set to work with Robe's Anolis ArcSource 96 fixtures, that feature the LumenRadio CRMX receiver for wireless control and Visual Productions' CueCore Solid-State controller.
The central controller would be housed in a, hard to access, machinery room under the center of the fountain. A computer installation would not survive the high humidity in the machinery room, a simple DMX recorder would allow no changes but with the CueCore Karov saw the possibility to fulfill the brief ideally.
The LumenRadio feature connected the DMX without cables and the CueCore was connected to this network and programmed from the web-based software via a remote IP Address. Karov programmed the lighting from his office 30 minutes away. The lighting is triggered using the days of the week scheduler with special lighting for events such as Valentines day, scheduled by date. Karov is also able to easily add or change effects as required by the Municipality on request.
Karov spoke of the CueCore stating “the ease of use, in programming is great. The scheduler allows for everything including sunrise/sunset. Programming regular changes without having to travel to the site, saves time and costs – a perfect solution.”

Dutch design, operating & video content company, Light Image, used the CueCore to great effect on the TV talent-show, "Holland's Got Talent" from RTL. Following on from the pre-recorded qualification rounds, "Holland's Got Talent" went onto broadcast a series of primetime live shows for the final stages of elimination and judgment of the winning act.
Three judges would watch each performance and judge whether it should leave the competition by choosing to press the elimination button which in turn lit up a large red cross above the jury. If all 3 crosses turned red then the lights, video & audio would freeze and the act would be eliminated from the competition. Light Image used the CueCores' MIDI-port to receive signals from the infamous large red crosses.
The CueCore was positioned between the Audio control room and the 3 lighting desks, a Compulite for the general stage lighting, a GrandMA for controlling the effect lighting and a GrandMA2, which was being used for controlling the video servers. The Audio room sent a MIDI trigger to the CueCore which in turn sent out the correct MIDI-notes to the Compulite and the GrandMA desk to implement the “lighting freeze” and also a third MIDI-note to the GrandMA2 to trigger the real-time video content. Additionally, all “Got Talent” leader-music automatically triggered the correct effect lighting and video cues in sync using the same technique via the CueCore.
The creative lighting design by Christian Ros (Light Language) and custom designed video content by Light Image made for a spectacular back drop to the talent seekers acts. Key to the design was the real-time triggering of the crosses followed by the co-ordinated "freezing" of the light, audio & video display. Of his choice to work with the CueCore, designer Bas van der Poel from Light Image states: "The CueCore allows us to offer our clients flexible and quick show control as an accompaniment to our realtime video content system, without having to worry about running additional computer systems and software. It fits perfectly in our goal to integrate our video content, lighting and audio."
Our German distributor, LMP, recently supplied a CueCore and other lighting equipment for the new Cinema Center in Papenburg. Designed and implemented by Werner Post of W.P.highlights, his concept revolves around energy efficiency with the magic word for the overall design being “Emotional signage”. The installation included the complete interior and exterior lighting.
LMP's own range of LED fixtures, V:LED were specified for the interior lighting of the new cinema building. Werner Post opted for the CueCore, solid-state controller to control the LEDs by DMX via V:LED USC-500 and dynamic RGB outdoor LED lighting. He programmed the outdoor lighting using the CueCore's scheduler to trigger the colour changes he had in place. The CueCore's scheduler is not only capable of triggering on time, date and weekday but also on sunrise and sunset, which really allows for programming creativity in such an installation.
Alongside the scheduled lighting design Post wanted to offer the Cinema true flexibility and creativity with their outdoor “Canvas” of the buildings facade itself. The CueCore allowed this to become possible with the implementation of the OSC protocol. Post made a simple remote control via an iPhone installed with the TouchOSC App. The Cinema staff are thus able to easily change the exterior lighting to reflect the latest movie that is screening. Werner says of this instal: “Our projects are always quality, with energy efficiency and durability of the technology crucial to our choice of products. The cinema complex was equipped with 59 LED spots with a total capacity of only 3,000 watts”, and underlined his choice for the CueCore “Innovative solid-state lighting control was key to allowing reliable scheduled and manual control of my lights. The CueCore provided well.”
